Type of the Notice: Tips to Keep Safe Online

Level of Impact: Low

Urgency Level: Low

User Action Required: No immediate action is required by users.

Purpose: To provide information on recent QR code phishing scams and remind staff to be warry when scanning QR codes from unknown origins.

Details: Recently, there has been a surge of QR code phishing scams as bad actors have been leveraging new technologies. Please be aware that scanning a QR code from an unknown source is unsafe and not recommended. Bad actors are able to easily create QR codes that either lead back to sites that may install malware on your device or lead to a fake website where your credentials are stolen without your knowledge. (Ex. A QR code leads you back to what appears to be the Gmail site, but is actually a fictitious site that only looks like the real deal, meant to capture your login credentials.)

Before scanning any QR code, please make sure you know where the QR code came from and that it is from a reputable source.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of the IT team should there be any further assistance needed regarding this Service Notice.
