Type of the Notice:  Security Procedure Update
Level of Impact:  High
Urgency Level:  Med

Purpose:  To inform you about an important change regarding password storage.

Details: To enhance security, as of Tuesday, October 15th, users will no longer be able to store passwords directly in the browser. Please know all previously stored passwords will still be available, but users will no longer be prompted to save or update passwords directly in the browser after 10/15/24.

Browsers, while convenient, are among the most easily compromised applications, making them a less secure option for storing sensitive information like passwords. This change is part of our ongoing commitment to protect your data and ensure the highest level of security across our systems.

We understand that this may require some adjustment, but we strongly recommend using a dedicated password manager. Password managers offer robust security features, including encryption, to keep your credentials safe from potential threats. They also provide the convenience of securely storing your passwords across different sites and devices.

Please know that ITS does not manage passwords for users in the organization, but we can make recommendations on password managers that would be helpful.

Password Manager Recommendations: Microsoft Authenticator, Last Pass, Bit Warden, and 1Password are a few examples of options. If you would like to better understand how to use a password manager, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly so we can walk through together.

We also strongly recommend against storing passwords in a standard Excel document. If Excel is your only preferred option, we would only recommend using if the spreadsheet is password protected as an additional layer.

User Action Required: No immediate user action is required at this time, but please make arrangements on how you will save new passwords moving forward after the 15th.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we implement this important security measure.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to any member of the IT team should there be any further assistance needed regarding this Service Notice.
